Jan 31, 2014· Most sand is primarily made of silica, however fine white silica sand is available in 80-100 lb. bags and can be very useful for some finish plasters. Silica sand is most commonly used in earth plasters that are applied in a very thin coat and pigmented (vs painted).
For the finish coat, a factory prepared mixture may be used or the finish coat may be proportioned and mixed at the jobsite. Job-mixed finish coat plaster will provide a truer color and more pleasing appearance if white portland cement is used in conjunction with a fine-graded, light-colored sand.
